Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells Research

I have had the opportunity to conduct research as part of a team of members with varying backgrounds. The research conducted was targetted to gaining maximum cell efficiency and practicing the method of production.

Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (or DSSCs) are the third generation of solar cells that consist of dyed molecules of a subsrtate such as TiO2, sandwiched between plates of conducting glass with an electrolyte. Dyes can range from raspberry and blueberry extracts to the Rhuthemuim based dyes. The specifc dye used was Rhuthenium N719.

This research was done for 6 months and included novel methods such as Double coating and Triple coating, all the while, focussing on layering TiO2 using Spin coating. Although Doctor Blading was practiced, it was not followed through due to its poor performance in term of efficiency.

All data was analyzed using Micrsoft Excel and was collected using Gamry Reference 600.

Preliminary research was conducted on flexible substrates and a method of production was made for such as cell. This was a first step deligated for the initiation of producing flexible substartes in the Thin Films and Devices Lab.

The report pertaining to the research can be seen in the link below.
